  • FEEDBACK: unable to use Spine if offline

Hello! I love Spine, I was an early adopter and I've used it for years. I just need you to know that this is irritating as hell:

As someone who lives in the countryside with spotty internet, or sometimes needs to work from a car or a train with no wifi, it's just a complete productivity killer. Sometimes I can have internet at home, but it's so slow not deemed 'fast enough' for Spine to connect, so I'm completely locked out.

I get that piracy is bad and presumably a huge problem, but you're punishing legit customers, here. Hopefully there's some sort of grace period you can implement so I'm not completely unable to animate if there's no internet?

Thanks!

Hello! I'm sorry to hear about the difficulties you're experiencing with using Spine offline. Spine requires an internet connection for the initial installation and activation, as well as for downloading updates. However, once these steps are completed, it should be possible to use Spine offline. If you're encountering issues where Spine is not starting without an internet connection, it might be due to Spine not having a valid update file. This can happen if Spine thinks its update is invalid and tries to download a new one. If you are using a virtual machine, this might also cause Spine to require an internet connection. To help resolve this, you can check your spine.log file for any errors or issues that might be causing this behavior. You can find more information on troubleshooting and the location of the spine.log file here.

danthat We’re sorry to hear you're having trouble. Spinebot's answer is correct, Spine can be run offline for a while after activation. However, this is only true if you are trying to run the editor version you have already downloaded. If you have selected Latest Stable or Latest 4.2 in the Version section of the startup window, Spine will try to download a new editor version whenever there is a patch version update. If you want to use Spine offline, you may want to launch the specific version you have already downloaded.

If you are trying to run a downloaded version and it does not work, you may want to check the spine.log file as recommended by Spinebot. The spine.log file can be opened via the Open Log button at the bottom left of the error message window. You can post it here so we can review the log. Please post the entire log, not just part of it (the forum will automatically remove your name and email from the log).

Not entirely sure I follow, but I'll take a look at it. This might be useful information (with steps on how to run an already-downloaded specific version) to the messaging on that screen, because I have no idea how to do that, or that I needed to do that? It's currently just a big, obtuse brick wall 🙂
