  • Estimate on when the 4.0 spine update will be released?

Hi Nate, I'm currently a rigger/animator for the upcoming "Goodby Volcano High" game and we're wondering at what time you estimate the 4.0 beta update will be available for testing. We're looking to utilize a couple of the features within the update and we would be happy to test out the beta as soon as it releases.

It's getting very close! 64-bit support and the new launcher is complete. Runtime support for the new ways timelines/curves work is complete, but only for the reference runtime implementation (spine-libgdx). A few larger new features are complete, such as color management and linear/gamma workflows. A lot of minor fixes/improvements have been done.

What is left before we can release the 4.0 beta:

  1. We are wrapping up the basics for the new graph view. The core is there, but there are some minor issues that need to be addressed. For example, automatic zooming to keep the curves visible doesn't always do what you want. The beta will be fully usable, but note some nonessential features will be missing in the early beta versions and we will add them as they are ready, such as selection in the graph view (currently can only drag individual keys/handles there).

  2. We are finishing up the last few assets needed for the 2x skin. Spine uses over 900 images for the UI and we've done a full pass of them all, both to clean them up where needed and to make versions that are twice the size. Spine v4 at 200% interface scale on a 4K monitor is very, very pretty!

  3. It needs a thorough round of testing. It's the largest release we've ever done and we want it to work correctly, even for a beta version.

I know everyone would love a hard date, and I'd love to be able to tell you, but the nature of software development makes giving an exact date impossible. We can't release it before it's done and we're working as hard as possible to get it there. That said, we are getting close and I'd love to have the first beta released in a couple weeks. :fiesta:

Couple means two weeks? :-) :-) :-) Our Typing Fingers - Enemy has been planned for April 2020 release and in fact going to be release in October 2020. So I understand the delay. Thanks for the 4K polish. :-)

Thanks for the update Nate. I'm glad to see things are coming together with the 4.0 update and we're looking forward to testing out all of the new features.

Here's a little teaser for how 2x looks: :sogood: (click for full size)

Of course you'd have much more room for the viewport with a larger window size.

Will post how the graph looks here soon!

Look forward to see the graph! :-)

Not finalized and missing some icons, but here's a peek! Using it is sooo nice! :sogood:

The graph is populated similar to how the dopesheet works, with the addition of visibility dots that allow you to control which items are visible in the graph.

When sync is enabled the dopesheet automatically shows the keys for the curves that the graph is showing. Also if the dopesheet and graph are above/below each other then sync zooms the dopesheet to match the graph and vice versa, so the keys match up vertically.

The "retime" options are about how the Bezier handles are adjusted when keys are moved. The Frame button zooms the graph so the curves are visible and Auto does that automatically, which is usually what you want.

Lovely. Look forward to move all forward on our side utilising your latest features. :-)

Beta comes out in a few weeks. How far are you from the full release?

I feel we are very close to 4.0 Beta. :-)

Getting there! We had to do a 3.8.98 release to fix some important Mac issues (hanging on start in some cases). That stole a few days of time and was released just now. Back to working on v4!

Can I use v4 on win7 x32?

Unfortunately no, v4+ is 64-bit only. You can continue using Spine, but you won't be able to run the v4 launcher and so you'll be limited to v3.8.98.

64-bit enables us to make Spine more powerful. 64-bit Windows has been available for 20 years, which is a very long time for computers. Even quite old computers should be 64-bit by now. Microsoft has discontinued support for Windows 7 and does not offer a 32-bit version of Windows 10.
