Some people made an SVG importer for Unity in the style of Unity's Sprite system.
And they got to speak at Unite Europe.
The dude said they used Spine for animations.

Very cool! There's no reason they can't render SVG to a texture and have it animated with Spine. Back in the day, long before Spine, I've done it. See Battle Camp for mobile, I think it still uses my tech. They could even render SVG directly, driven by Spine bones. I guess that would be their goal, which is why he said no mesh deformation.
